We drove and yellow reflective lines divided us. Not from each other but from the blurry darkness beside us. We drove down city streets littered by cops with baited headlights, down parkways where deer froze like statues. Time was still. Decision hung in the air. We drove in peace, but everywhere there was something waiting to steal our sense of security.
Him: I just feel like I’m hurting you.
Me: Because you are.
Him: But I don’t want to.
Me: Then get better.
You keep looking at this like a sacrifice, but it’s not. You are my friend and I love you and if my doing this means that I get to have you around, than that’s an investment.
